Matrupanchakam by Adi Shankaracharya

मातृपञ्चकम् written by Adi Shankaracharya,  describes the glory of the mother. This stotra was composed by him while his mother, Aryamba was on her deathbed. The shlokas and explanation of each,in which Adi Shankaracharya glorifies the greatness of the mother and her unmatched love and affection is given below-

Oh mother of mine , you bore the extreme pain caused by me while I was born. After being born , you shared the bed which was dirtied by me for an year. Your body became thin and painful. During the nine months that you bore me , and for all these in return , Oh dearest mother , I can never give back or compensate even after becoming great.

After seeing me in the robes of a sanyasi in my Gurukula , in your dreams , you wept and rushed there. You embraced and fondled me . Oh my mother , all the teachers and students wept with you but what could I do, except falling at your feet and offering my salutations.

I did not give you water at your time of death , neither did I offer oblations to you to help you in your journey of death. And neither did I chant तारकनामा (Rama nama) in your ear. Oh supreme mother , please pardon me for these faults of mine with compassion. I have arrived here late , to attend to you.

' Long live , jewel and pearl of mine , my dearest eyes , oh my soul of soul , oh my prime dearest '

You sang all these to me. But in return , oh dearest mother , I give you only dry rice in your mouth.

Oh mother of mine, during hard labour, you cried and shouted in pain,'Oh mother, Oh father,  Oh Lord Shiva, Krishna,Govinda,Hari and Mukunda. But in return, dearest mother, I can only offer my humble salutations and prostrations to you.
